Assignment 308: Understanding Leadership Understanding leadership styles The University of the Arts London is a culturally rich and diverse workplace. This diversity has an impact on the choice of leadership styles and behaviours a manager should adopt in the workplace but there are also other factors that come into play. Leadership in general is about influencing, motivating and inspiring people. It is about coaching, mentoring and developing people, treating them with respect but challenging them. Leaders at the University of the Arts London seek to create strong teams, with people committed to the Universities overall goals and strategic aims. The style of leadership that can be adopted can vary depending on the task in hand. Some managers will let teams take charge of their own decision making for many tasks. Managers or team leaders will set the objectives but empower their people to decide how these objectives are achieved. This has several advantages. It helps to motivate individuals in the team and it draws on the expertise of the members of the team. The Universityââ¬â¢s culture and staff and the wide and varied roles across the departments and Colleges, influence the leadership styles required. In teaching areas for example, leaders need to be creative and challenging and encourage their staff to be innovative, experimental and to express their opinions openly. A leader may also be responsible for managing a team of administrators as well as teaching staff.
